42 years on – the BMW 5 Series continues its global and regional dominance in the Gulf Region

The fan-base of the BMW 5 series has been growing continuously after the past decade in the Middle East and North Africa region, supported by the fact that since its launch in 1972, the BMW 5 Series has been the undisputed global leader in the executive car segment.

This success is echoed in the Middle East with the BMW 5 Series being not only the leader in the executive car segment but also the best-selling BMW model in 2013 with 5,729 cars sold, an increase of 10% over 2012 figures. The BMW 5 Series has since continued its success in Q1 of 2014 with 1,790 cars sold at an increase of 15%.

Throughout its successful 42 years, the BMW 5 Series has acquired more than 72 international awards including: Germany’s Favourite Car and Car of the Year from the UK, Bulgaria, Mexico, Thailand and New Zealand, USA’s 2010 GOOD DESIGN Award, the Red Dot award, the iF Product Design Award, the Design Prize of the Federal Republic of Germany, the Design Award from the Auto Bild, the Design Trophy from the Auto Zeitung magazine and a multitude of other awards on different continents that continue to reaffirm the global popularity of the BMW 5 Series.

The new BMW 5 Series is available with specific design packages: BMW Modern Line and BMW Luxury Line. With the BMW Lines, customers can enjoy two distinctive personalities which shine the spotlight on selected facets of the car’s character to great effect. Both Lines include LED fog lamps, 18-inch or 19-inch light-alloy wheels, B-pillar trim and exterior mirror bases in high-gloss black, illuminated door pulls with chrome trim and matching illuminated door sill strips with aluminium inserts bearing BMW lettering. ‘Luxury’ or ‘Modern’ badges can also be found on the front side panels.

The BMW Luxury Line exudes a high level of elegance and exclusiveness thanks to a carefully assembled selection of premium features for both the exterior and interior. The chrome finish of the trim bars in the outer sections of the lower air intake, the fronts of the black kidney grille slats, the window recess finishers, trim strip in the rear apron and the exhaust tailpipe embellishers all add gleaming touches. Leather upholstery with exclusive stitching, a black sports leather steering wheel and interior trim strips in exquisite Fineline anthracite wood create a particularly refined interior ambience.

The BMW Modern Line package displays a strikingly contemporary and dynamic edge. The air intake bars, kidney grille slats, rear trim strip and tailpipe embellishers come in matt chrome, and the instrument panel and sports leather steering wheel can be specified as an option in the light colour shade Oyster. Interior trim strips in dark Pearl and exclusive stitching for the optional leather upholstery ensure the interior creates an eye-catching impression. In addition, all variants of the new BMW 5 Series can also be ordered with a model-specific M Sport package to further increasing the scope for individualisation.

Notable design features include Xenon headlights lights, slender 'winglets' above the air-intakes in the front grille, new light-alloy wheels and new paint and trim combinations including the new Pyrite Brown metallic as well as the matt surfaces provided by the Frozen paint finishes.

The new BMW 5 Series is also available in a range of powerful engine variants: BMW 520i, BMW 528i, BMW 535i and BMW 550i. The new generation of the V8 engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology found under the bonnet of the BMW 550i takes to the stage armed with a 10 per cent rise in output yet also significantly reduced fuel consumption. The multi-award-winning straight-six engine delivers 225 kW/306 hp to the BMW 535i. The engine powering the BMW 520i develops 135 kW/184 hp.

The engine offered in the BMW 528i was recently awarded the ‘Class Victory’ at the 2013 Engine of the Year Awards. The winning BMW engine comprises a twin-scroll turbocharger, High Precision Direct Injection and BMW Valvetronic fully variable valve control that delivers 180 kW/245 hp.

In the cockpit, the range of on-board BMW ConnectedDrive technology in the new BMW 5 Series expands on an already impressive network of driver assistance systems and mobility services designed to enhance safety, convenience and in-car infotainment. A suite of office functions turns the model into a mobile workplace – underpinned by either the customer’s mobile phone or the car’s integrated SIM card. Emails, appointments, contacts, calendar entries and notes are displayed on the cockpit’s central screen.

BMW Apps guide the user through the large and ever increasing number of services, which can be accessed using the customer’s phone or internet connection. BMW Apps includes features such as a web radio function, access to your personalised music library and in-car use of Facebook and Twitter. This service is constantly expanding to include new apps, which can be uploaded into the car via the SIM card or a smartphone.

The new additions will see the BMW 5 Series further consolidating its leading role in the field of mobile business applications and internet-based infotainment.
